First Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was an Australian, Sir Osborne Smith, who served from April 1, 1935, to June 30, 1937. The third RBI Governor, CD Deshmukh who assumed office on August 11, 1943, was the first Indian to serve as the apex bank's Governor. Notably, Urjit Patel was appointed the 24th RBI Governor on Saturday.
