To impart special training to Pathi Singhs and Granthis
SGPC to introduce subject on Sikh history and culture in its educational institutions
Chandiagrh, April 23, 2017: Shiromani Gurawara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) on Sunday took and important decision of introducing teaching Sikh history and culture as a separate subject in the educational institutions being run by it.
SGPC chief Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar announced this decision while addressing a national seminar of the Role of the Sikhs in Freedom Movement with a special reference to Andaman and Nicobar Cellular Jail. The SGPC organized the seminar here on Sunday.
With this, the students at 38 schools and colleges being run by the SGPC will be taught history, culture and traditions of the Sikhs.
Badungar also disclosed that the SGPC has set up a Sports and Cultural Wing headed by a Sikh woman educationist to achieve the abovesaid larger objective of correcting any distortions that might have crept into the historical and cultural narrative related to the Sikhs.
In another significant development, the SGPC has decided to impart special training to Pathi Singhs, Granthis and Kirtinayas so as to ensure better compliance of the Sikh religious code and improve the overall management of the gurdwaras.
This training will be imparted at a training institute set up at Patiala in the memory of the late Akali leader Gurcharan Singh Tohra.
SGPC will open more such training institutes. Any Granthi or Pathi Singh who has qualified from these institutes will be appointed by the SGPC in gurdwaras.
Badungar added that all those management committee/panchayats managing gurdwaras independent of the SGPC control would be contacted and persuaded to send their granthis to this institute for training. The SGPC will bear their boarding and lodging expenses with an additional stipend.
