Chandigarh, November 23, 2017: India's premier educational institution, IIT Bombay has awarded Chandigarh University Gharuan with Nodal University Award 2017 for exemplary work undertaken in the field of Skill Development of the students under the Spoken Tutorial Project – FOSS (Free Open Source Software). The prestigious award has been conferred to Chandigarh University Gharuan for a record certification & training of 12,000 students under the Skill Development initiative within one year. The award was presented by Ms. Shayma Iyer, Project Director Spoken Tutorial, MHRD, New Delhi & Prof(Dr.) P.K Tulsi, Former Director, NITTTR, Chandigarh during a ceremony held at the campus of National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh. Dr. Satbir Sehgal, Director, University Institute of Engineering (UIE) received the award on the behalf of Chandigarh University.
Spoken Tutorial Project is Skill Development initiative undertaken by Ministry of Human Resource & Development (MHRD), Government of India where students and faculty can enhance their technical skill-set by undergo on-line training in the Open Source Software & Technology and hence an attempt to increase employability. While giving details, Dr. Sehgal said, "It was in September 2016 that IIT Bombay established FOSS Centre at the Chandigarh University campus which was Punjab’s 1st Free Open Source Software (FOSS) Spoken-Tutorial Centre and it is a matter of great pride that within a short time we have been able to train more than 12,000 students". He further added that, "Training on emerging technologies such as Joomla, Java Business Applications, KTouch, ORCA, OpenFoam, Netbeans, Thunderbird, PHP & SQL that are used by the IT Industry to develop applications and softwares for the various clients in the banking and e-commerce industry and as a result of this training which will be a certified on-line course, the students will enhance their technical skills as per the Industry requirements which will lead to their increased chances of selection during campus placements".
Elated on the achievement, Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chancellor, Chandigarh University said, “We are committed towards Government of India's mission to increase Digital Literacy among common man so that they can become technology-savvy and also towards Skill Development mission so as to enhance the employability skills among the youth”.
