More than 61 University teams from 7 States taking part in the North Zone Inter-University Chess Tournament
Chandigarh, November 06, 2019: The North Zone Inter-University Chess Tournament organized by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) got underway here at the campus of Chandigarh University Gharuan with 61 teams vying for top honors. Dr. B.S.Sohi, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Chandigarh University inaugurated the North Zone Inter-University Chess Tournament in which university teams from Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pardesh, UP, Uttrakhand, J&K, Haryana are taking part. The best fourt Universities will qualify and represent the North Zone at the All-India Inter-University Chess Tournament to be held later this year.
On the first day of the tournament in the Women’s category Team from University of Delhi beat CJSM University Kanpur (4-0) while Punjab University, Chandigarh team beat DAV University Jalandhar (4-0). Team LPU Phagwara beat DCRUST Murthal (3-1) while Thapar University beat Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Agra (3-1). The most exciting match was played between HP University Shimla and IK Gujral Punjab Technical University, Kapurthala which ended in a draw (2-2). Team Chitkara University, Rajpura beat MRSPTU Bathinda (3-1) while team Punjabi University Patiala beat Guru Jameshwar University, Hissar (2.5-1.5). The teams will play the second round tomorrow which will decide the final teams that will compete in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
In the Men’s category of the tournament, team Delhi University beat DCRUST Murthal (4-0) while team MDU Rohtak beat MJP Rohilkhand University, Bareilly (4-0). The match between SRM University, Sonepat and GADVASU Ludhiana ended in a draw (2-2) while team from CCS University Merrut beat Dr. RMLAU Ayodhya (3.5-0.5). Team of PEC University Chandigarh beat CBL University Bhiwani (4-0) while LPU Phagwara beat HNB University Gharwal. The host team Chandigarh University Gharuan beat Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar (4-0).
