Chandigarh, September 02, 2017: Noted Punjabi folk singer Paramjit Singh Sidhu was conferred with lifetime achievement award by Punjab Virasat Manch at a glittering ceremony at Chandigarh University Gharuan. Paramjit Singh Sidhu popularly known as Pammi Bai has been awarded for his rich contribution to promote Punjabi culture, folk singing and folk dances of Punjab at National and International level. Nidharak Singh Brar, President, Punjab Virasat Manch & State Information Commissioner, Punjab along with Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chancellor, Chandigarh University honored the Punjabi singer, Pammi Bai with the lifetime achievement award has also been recipient of various National awards which includes Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the 2016, Shiromani
Punjabi Award in 2009 and Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006.
Noted Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi, Former President Punjabi Sahitya Academy, Prof. Gurbhajan Gill, International Activist for the promotion of Punjabi culture, Prof. Rajpal Singh, Eminent Punjabi Scholar, Dr. Deepak Manmohan Singh, Director of Youth welfare, Punjab University, Prof. Nirmal Jaura were also present during the award ceremony. While highlighting the contributions of Pammi Bai in the field of Punjabi folk singing and dance, Nidharak Singh Brar, President, Punjab Virasat Manch said that “Pammi Bai has been actively involved for last 37 years to present the rich Punjabi Virasat at international level in the form of Punjabi folk dance and folk singing”. Prof. Rajpal Singh attributed the work done by Pammi Bai in the field of Punjabi literature and folk singing to be extra ordinary as his contribution has encouraged many generations to take up Punjabi folk singing and dancing as a profession and gave him the title ‘Brand Ambassador of Punjabi folk ’. Jasbir Jassi appreciated the contribution made by Pammi Bai which attributed to the promotion of Punjabi culture at International level and reconnected today’s youth with their roots. On receiving the lifetime achievement award, the 52 years old Pammi Bai expressed gratitude and thanked Punjabi Virasat Manch for honoring him. While interacting with the audience he said “As a true torch bearer of Punjabi folk, I will continue to serve Punjabi language, literature and culture till my last breath but wish to pass on this legacy to the next generation so that Punjabi culture and heritage continue to live and thrive”. While congratulating the singer, Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chancellor, Chandigarh University said “Although today’s youth is fascinated by the western culture yet it is important to liaison them with their traditions,
rituals, customs & culture and it is people like Pammi Bai who are helping us in this cause by extending their full support towards promotion of Punjabi culture on international arena. The singer enthralled the audience with his foot-tapping and famous numbers “Ashke”, Punjabi Boliyan & Tappe, while he presented his skills of folk dance along with the university students. As a mark of respect to Pammi Bai the Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi performed live for the
audience which included “Heer by Bulley Shah”.
