Jalandhar, April 14, 2020: In a major decision aimed at decongesting the grain markets for smooth procurement of wheat amidst COVID- 19, the Jalandhar administration has decided to double the purchase centres in district by creating 78 additional procurement centres along with existing 78.
A decision to this effect has been taken by the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Mr. Varinder Kumar Sharma to ensure that social distancing was maintained in the grain markets during the procurement of grains. This was inconsonance of the firm commitment of the Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to procure every single grain of the farmers in the state.
Divulging the details, the Deputy Commissioner said that the procurement of grains would start from today (April 15) and would continue till May 31. He said that 5.31 lakh metric ton of grains were expected in the grain markets for which elaborate arrangements have been made.
Sharma said that for purchase of grain grid marking of 30 by 30 feet has been done in the mandis in which every farmer would unload their produce so that social distancing was maintained.
The Deputy Commissioner said that said that during the procurement coupons would be issued by market committees to Arthiyas which would be subsequently given to the farmers adding that a farmer would be entitled to take multiple coupons each day or on different days depending on space in order to avoid rush in the mandis. He further said that farmers with each coupon would be entitled to bring one trolley having about 50 quintal wheat. Sharma reiterated the commitment of the district administration to procure every single grain of the farmers in this hour of crisis.
The Deputy Commissioner said that along with existing 78 procurement centres, the district administration has also set up 78 additional procurement centres in district thereby raising the total number of purchase centres to 156.
