Facilitates direct ‘farmer to consumer’ sale of vegetables
S. A. S. Nagar, May 13, 2020: Overwhelmed by uncertainty in the sale of produce during the lockdown, many small farmers sold their vegetables to the wholesalers at reduced rates, cutting short the profit margin and at times at a price barely enough to cover the cost of the produce. Taking strict note of the same, in accordance with the directions of the Punjab Horticulture Department, the district Horticulture officers came forward for their hand-holding.
To begin with, the Horticulture Development Officer of block Kharar facilitated direct ‘farmer to consumer’ sale of vegetables. The various vegetables grown by the small farmers were made available for sale on reasonable rates in various societies of Kharar. The rationale behind the exercise was to make sure that some profit accrues to the small farmers. The farmers of block Kharar namely Navdeep Singh from village Badali, Kulwant Singh Shakrullanpur, Sukhwinder Kaur R/o Kharar expressed happiness at the step undertaken by the Horticulture Department to benefit small farmers.
