9 booked in 8 cases under Excise Act, 4 arrested including one woman
Illicit liquor production goes unabated, Police arrest four persons including one woman
Ferozepur, May 25, 2020: The Punjab Police in association with the Excise Department officials continued its drive, under ‘Operation Red Rose’, against the illegal business of illicit liquor going on in the state, putting a huge loss of the government exchequer and the joint operation was planned when the government was alarmed of the huge losses.
In this context, another 8 cases were booked at different stations in the district – Sadar, Cantt, Talwandi, Arif ke, Zira, Guruarsahai and Mallanwala and booked persons besides recovery of 282 bottles of illicit liquor and 260 liters of ‘lahan’. The police managed to arrest four persons including one woman while other managed to escape from the spot of their illegal business on seeing the raiding teams.
The illicit liquor production has gone unabated in the district and the latest trend of seizure of huge catchy of illicit liquor and ‘lahan’ has baffled the police department.
The crackdown of illicit brewing trade and inter-state smuggling of country-made liquor going on in the border district is also unprecedented especially in the villages situated along the Sutlej River without any reduction in intensity or strength.
However, the police officials claimed that they had nabbed a number of persons involved in illegal production and sale of liquor but the fact is that it is still going on as evident from the repeated seizures and arrests of bootleggers.
Earlier on two occasion, more than one lakh liter ‘lahan’ on two occasios was recovered which was however, destroyed in violation of the environmental laws.
All have been booked under Sections 61/1/14 of Excise Act and further proceedings are in progress.
