SDMs to grant sanctions for Protests/Rallies in Jalandhar

Jalandhar, July 10,2020: - District Magistrate Ghanshyam Thori has authorized Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) as the competent authority to grant any kind of sanction/approval for protest/rallies/procession in the areas of Jalandhar rural.
It may be mentioned here that the permissions for the rallies/protests under the area of Municipal Corporation are granted by the Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar.
In the orders issued here today, District Magistrate said that the district Jalandhar has a large rural area and people have to travel to headquarter for any permission to hold any rally/protest.
He said that now concerned SDMs would be entitled to grant such permissions besides ensuring the compliance of guidelines issued by Department of Home and Justice, Punjab on November 6, 2018, before granting permission. They would also have to maintain the record of applications/permissions in a proper way for future references.
He said that the orders would be in force by September 2, 2020.
District Magistrate has also ordered to all villages falling under the jurisdiction of the district to hold Thikri Pehras (night patrol) from 8 pm to 5 am in their villages.
Exercising the powers vested under Section 144, Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, Thori directed all Nagar Councils, Nagar and village Panchayats to follow the order and asked their heads to inform SHOs of their areas regarding the details of persons who will part of ‘Thikri Pehra’ teams.
Thori said that the orders would be in force by September 30, 2020.
The district magistrate has also banned the bursting of firecrackers on the national or state highways and opening gunfire in marriage places or hotels during wedding functions or private functions.
He also banned any type of procession, carrying of firearms in procession, gathering of five or more persons and raising slogans in the jurisdiction of Commissionerate police.
He said that these orders would be in force by September 7, 2020.
