Chandigarh, October 20, 2020: Professor Chaman Lal, former Dean, Faculty of Languages, Panjab University Chandigarh, has demanded that a university in Delhi be named after freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.
“It was a pleasure to know that Delhi Govt. has set up Skill University in Delhi-NCR and proposes to set up more Universities, to make higher education easily accessible for Delhi students. It is also an appreciable part of Delhi Govt's focus on the Education and health sector,” said Lal addressing Delhi Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, respectively.
“Delhi Government has set up Universities in the name of Dr. Ambedkar, Netaji Subhash Bose and Guru Gobind Singh. I suggest that the Skill University or any more University in pipeline should be set up in the name of supreme revolutionary freedom fighter and heartthrob of Indian youth Bhagat Singh,” he said.
“Till now out of 900+ Universities in India, out of which 300 hundred are in public sector-Central and state Universities, none is named on Shaheed Bhagat Singh's name. It is an irony that despite being the most popular and inspirational hero of Indian youth, no University is named after Bhagat Singh in India,” lamented Lal.
“There is a University in the name of another equally popular revolutionary hero Chander Shekhar Azad, but none in the name of Bhagat Singh,” he said.
“Bhagat Singh had deep association with Delhi and it would be appropriate to name a University in Delhi and first in India to be named after the supreme martyr-Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. I hope Delhi Govt, would consider the suggestion, particularly to promote 'Positive Nationalism', which focuses on the central role of Bhagat Singh, as devised by Sh. Gopal Rai, Delhi AAP convenor and minister in Delhi Govt,” said Lal.
