Vancouver , October 25, 2015: The Liberal red wave has surprised everyone. At best the polls were showing a Liberal minority government. However, as the polls closed on Monday it became obvious that Justin Trudeau and his Liberals had won a solid majority fair and square. The latest figures show that the Liberal Party has won 184 seats with 99 for Conservatives and 44 for NDP 10 Bloc and 1 for the Greens. This election has been unique in many ways. It was clear from the very beginning that people wanted a change. The Conservatives under Stephen Harper had alienated a vast majority of Canadians. Justin Trudeau appeared to offer what Canadians were longing for. He conveyed a message of hope, optimism, inclusion and compassion. This was quite different from the Conservative politics of fear and division. A number of factors seem to have worked in favour of Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Party. First of all, it was an overwhelming public feeling for a change in government. It has been reported that almost 70% of Canadians wanted a change in Ottawa. It was evident that it was time for Stephen Harper and his Conservative Party to say good bye. The Conservative campaign against Justin Trudeau (Not Ready) seems to have backfired on them as a lot of young people stampeded to the polls to support this relatively young and energetic leader of the Liberal Party. Harper’s bills C-24 and C-51 had alienated a vast number of ethnic voters and communities. This brought about the reversal from the 2011 voting pattern when a vast majority of the ethnic vote went with the Conservatives. This time it was quite the reverse. The role of the Indo-Canadian community in this election has been quite pronounced. Overall, 42 Indo-Canadians threw their hats in the ring. Traditionally, at the federal level, most of the Indo-Canadian community has gone with the Liberals. 2011 was an exception when the community went with the Conservatives with some supporting the NDP. This time, as the NDP vote collapsed, our community scampered to the Liberal camp. The election of two dozen South Asians including 18 Punjabis is a historic development for our community. Thus, there will be more Punjabis sitting in the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa than those (13) sitting in the Indian Parliament in New Delhi. This is a reflection of the progress our community has made since our ancestors set foot on this land some 120 years ago. Now that the election is over, the real work begins for Justin Trudeau and his colleagues. According to the Liberal platform, there are a number of areas where we might see a major shift. These include changes to immigration and citizenship policies and procedures, more openness, accountability in government and a shift in our foreign policy. Unfortunately, under Stephen Harper, Canada has blindly followed the U.S. in our foreign policy. This was a major departure from previous policy whereby Canada acted more independently than our neighbours to the South. We need to revert back to the Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau era when Canada was one of the most respected countries in the world. It has been reported that close to 1,800 candidates put forward their names for public office in this election. Only 338 had to be elected. All of them, whether they won or lost must be congratulated and thanked for their willingness to serve their fellow Canadians. In the Metro Vancouver area of our community, I would like to congratulate Sukh Dhaliwal, Randeep Sarai, Harjit Sajjan and Jatinder Sidhu for their victories. At the same time, I would like to thank, Jinny Sims, Jasbir Sandhu and Nine Grewal for their excellent service to their communities and Canada.
