H. S. Phoolka urges people to save Punjab from drug disaster
Ludhiana (Babushahi Bureau) : The first phase of campaign for drug-free polls, started by HS Phoolka, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court concluded on Sunday in the city. Under the auspices of Civil Society Against Drugs (CAD) Punjab, Phoolka addressed rallies and marches at 13 places and covered a distance of more than 500 kilometers. The march covered various places across Punjab like Baghapurana, Moga, Jagraon, Mullanpur. It started from Amritsar and covered Tarn Taran, Khadur Sahib, Zira, Ferozepur, Muktsar and Faridkot. A large number of social activists, industrialists and religious leaders gave a warm welcome to Phoolka on his arrival in the city. Bhai Devinder Singh Khannewale led the march to Fountain Chowk. Many youngsters of Ludhiana city were carrying banners, placards thanking Phoolka for starting drug-free polls campaign in Punjab. Braving rains and cold weather, a large number of youth, most of them first time voters, on motor bikes and cars participated in the march. Addressing the gathering, Phoolka stated that as per the reports and feedback received during the march, alcohol and other drugs worth more than Rs 300 crore are feared to be distributed in Punjab in the next 15 days. He said if people took this seriously, many candidates could face even disqualification by the Election Commission. He said this would devastate many families of the state and the total social fabric would run the risk of collapse. But if people raise their voice, he said, be vigilant about drug distribution and report about the supply lines, the state can be saved from drug disaster. He appealed to the people to use their mobile sets as potential deterrent to the use of drugs in polls by carrying sting operations, clicking photographs and recording voice conversation of candidates and their supporters. According to Dr Sarabjeet Singh, co-coordinator, a number of NGOs working in the state have pledged their support to this cause. Many gurdwara and mandir committees were being contacted to spread the message, he added. The Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle has chalked out more than seven marches in the state for raising public awareness, he revealed. Manpreet Singh, Mehak Jain, Sangeeta Rani, Gurleen Kaur, all post graduate students seemed very enthusiastic about the outcome of this march and pledged to mobilise public opinion against the use of drugs in enticing the voters in Punjab. The second phase of march will commence from January 20 and cover the rest of Punjab. Chairman of the Punjab State Farmers\' Commission Dr GS Kalkat appreciated Phoolka\'s efforts and stated that only an aware society could save itself from the social evils. He thanked Phoolka, who had come all the way from New Delhi, to awaken the voters of Punjab.
