Hoshiarpur: 27 August, 2016: In the light of two day meeting of DCs & SSPs held by the Deputy Secretary of election commission at Chandigarh, all the district administrations in the state have started to review the work of preparation of the electoral rolls. As the state assembly elections are to be held earlier next year, Election commission of India (ECI) have started the preparation in this regard. The five year term of the state assembly is going to be expired on 18th March, 2017. Punjab is among the five states, where elections are going to be held next year. Goa, Manipur, Uttarkhand and Uttar Pradesh are the states which will go to polls.
The aim of the meeting was to review the arrangements including law & order and focus on taping ladies and young voters, who sometimes are left out in the voter lists or do not franchise the right to vote. The ECI Deputy Secretary also stressed to indentify vulnerable areas in the districts and make proper arrangements for them, so that they can participate in the election process freely & fairly.
Deputy Commissioner of Hoshiarpur, Anindita Mitra convened a meeting to implement the directions of the ECI in the district.
She said on the basis of eligibility on attaining the age of 18 years as on 1.1.2017, anyone who has reached 18 years age can be enrolled as voter from September 7 to October 7, during the revision of voters list schedule.
She further said, the claims and objections will also be invited by all the EROs in forms No.6, 7, 8 and 8 A from September 7, 2016 to October 7, 2016 and take action for deletion and addition of votes. For deletion of votes, a proper seven days’ notice may be given and it should be deleted only after completing all the formalities.

Mansa DC, Varinder Kumar Sharma said, the youths between 18-19 years will be encouraged at length for enrolling as voter and they will be made aware about the importance of right to franchise vote during the elections by organizing continuous campaign at school, colleges and other education institutions. We are also planning to hold awareness rallies in the city.

Fazilka DC, Isha Kalia told “We will formulate an action plan to focus on the women, youth, and differently abled persons to make them aware regarding the right of franchise voting”.

DC Nawanshahr, Vipul Ujwal said “We will launch a campaign to aware the activists of the political parties, general public & vulnerable section of the society to participate in the elections. We will also plan steps to target an increase in voter turnout in the identified low turnout polling stations”. We will inspect all the polling stations with regard to make all required arrangements especially the ramps for the physically challenged persons.
