Chandigarh, March 11, 2017: Simerjit Singh Bains and Balwinder Singh Bains popularly known as Bains brothers have won from Atam Nagar and Ludhiana South seats with comfortable margins defeating their nearest Congress rivals.
Elder of the two, Balwinder Singh Bains inflicted a crushing defeat on his Congress rival Bhupinder Singh Sidhu from Ludhiana South. He won by a whopping margin of 36,917 votes. Bains polled 53,955 votes whereas Sidhu got 23,038 votes. Bains was the sitting MLA from this seat.
Simerjit Bains defeated his former close aide Kamaljit Singh Karwal of Congress from Atam Nagar seat by a margin of 16, 913 votes. He polled 53,421 votes against 36,508 votes of Karwal.
Both brothers formed Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) following their stupendous victory in 2012 Assembly elections as Independent candidates. Both joined Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) but later parted ways. Karwal too had been in SAD but left it ahead of the Assembly elections to join Congress which fielded him from Atam Nagar seat.
