Amritsar, April 27, 2017: (Jagmohan Singh and Rajan Mann) A B.Sc student of Khalsa College, Amritsar allegedly committed suicide under duress. Top college officials including principal were booked.
Hailing from Bathinda, the deceased Harpreet Singh was student of B.Sc (Agriculture). He was reportedly detained from appearing in examination by the college authorities for shortage of lectures.
His body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room on Wednesday evening.
His classmates and other college students went on strike since Thursday morning. They staged a dharna at the entrance of the college demanding registration of criminal case against the college management including principal and his class incharge.
Agitating students also blocked the main GT road leading to traffic chaos all around.
The police booked college Principal Dr. Mehal Singh, Registrar Dr. Devender Singh and head, department of Agriculture Dr. Randeep Kaur Bal on charge of abetment to suicide under section of 306 of IPC.
Protesting students alleged the authorities denied him roll number for appearing in the examination despite the deceased having submitted an application along with a medical certificate citing Chikungunya and eye surgery as reasons for shortfall in his attendance.
Khasla College management led by its honorary secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina condemned the FIR registered against college authorities as none of them had any personal enmity or grudge against the deceased. The deceased was detained from appearing in the examination in accordance with the university rules.
“We express deepest grief over the sad demise of the student of our college but the FIR against the top college officials must be quashed immediately,” said Chhina. The college staff threatened to go on strike if the FIR was not cancelled.
