SC quashes petition seeking stay on NEET ordinance
New Delhi, May 27, 2016
The Supreme Court has quashed a plea filed to stay NEET ordinance and allowed the states to go ahead with their own medical entrance examinations, on Friday.
The Apex Court said that there is no need for an interim order on the issue as the Centre has not ‘denied’ NEET but just exempted these seven states - Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Punjab - for a year.
The court will now start hearing the petitions opposing the ordinance after the six-week summer vacation ends i.e. June 30,.
One such petition moved by Indore-based doctor Anand Rai challenged the ordinance which was signed by President Pranab Mukherjee.
President had signed the ordinance on May 24 after seeking clarifications from the government and legal opinion from law experts. The ordinance is aimed at “partially” overturning a Supreme Court order which said the NEET will be held on July 24.
