Chandigarh, 25 June, 2017: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday demanded a survey by experts to damage to ecology of the areas in Punjab where illegal mining is going on.
The finding of the survey could be helpful in devising and taking preventive measures in anticipation of natural disasters due to rampant unauthorized mining in these areas.
Demanding this, AAP leader advocate Dinesh Chadha said the level of ground water was declining in the affected area especially in Rupnagar district due to which farmers were suffering as their irrigation tube wells have failed. The course of surface water flow too has changed as a dangerous effect of the illegal mining.
He accused the government of patronizing the illegal mining and turning a blind eye to the danger posed by these ecological changes.
“If this very serious issue is not taken care of, these areas might head towards a terrible ecological disaster. So it is the need of the hour that the concerned departments of the state and central governments undertake the survey,” said Chadha.
He suggested the Amarinder government to collect the reports of the ongoing ecological disturbances from its own MLAs or even independent sources to check veracity of apprehensions expressed by him. Saving the state’s ecology and environment is in the larger interest of its people, he added.
