Badal reiterates demand for Sukhpal Khaira’s resignation
Chandigarh, November 20, 2017: Former CM and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) patron Parkash Singh Badal on Monday said Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Khaira should tender his resignation immediately on moral grounds.
The statement of Badal has come in the wake of Khaira citing the former CM’s past statement that mere court summoning made no offence. Before Badal’s statement, the SAD had also reacted to Khaira’s rejoinder to its demand of his resignation after being summoned by a trial court in drugs related case.
In his latest statement Badal said that “the fact of the matter is that I was the first person to ask for Sukhpal Khaira’s resignation on November 1, immediately after he was summoned as an accused in a cross border drug racket case with Pakistani links by a Fazilka court”.
The former CM said that the HC had dismissed the revision petition of Khaira and upheld the Fazilka court order of summoning him as an accused. It also rejected Khaira’s claims that he was a victim of political vendetta.
In light of this judgment by the HC Khaira’s position had become untenable and he should not delay tendering his resignation any longer, added Badal.
Referring to a media story quoting him as saying that Khaira should quit only when held guilty, the former CM said the import of his words had not been understood in right perspective and that he was quoted out of context.
