International seminar against nuclear weapons on March 24-25 in Delhi
New Delhi, March 23, 2018: An international seminar on "Treaty Prohibiting Nuclear Weapons-Opportunities and Challenges” is being held on March 24 and 25, 2018 at Constitution Club, New Delhi.
The prestigious event is being organized jointly by All Indian Peace and Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO), Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) and Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace, informed Dr Arun Mitra, senior vice-president IDPD.
The treaty, passed by 122 votes in favour and only one against, has been possible as a result of long drawn struggle by ICAN - the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear weapons. For this accomplishment the ICAN was awarded Nobel Peace prize for 2017.
But it is a matter of serious concern that the nine nuclear weapons possessing countries including the USA, Russia, UK, France, China, Israel, India, Pakistan and North Korea did not participate in the treaty negotiations.
Dr Mitra, who is also co-president of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), said that the present seminar is a part of the strategy to hold such events in all nuclear weapons states followed by dialogue with decision makers and impress upon them to utilize this historic opportunity to save the world from mutually assured destruction.
A press conference for the purpose is being held at 11.30 am, March 24 at the Press Club of India. It will be addressed by Dr Tillman Ruff - Founding Chair of the ICAN and Dr Ira Helfand - member International Steering group of ICAN.
