Drive Against Menace Of Drugs
Encouraging Public Response Helps Police To Bring Addicts To Treatment Centres
Police Have Approached 161 Villages and Get Started Treatment Of 236 Addicts
Nawanshahr, July 20, 2018: The strict action against the drug peddlers as well as the encouraging public response to the drive against the drugs has virtually been helping the police to bring the addicts to the treatment centres, thus ensuring their social rehabilitation.
This was stated by the SP (HQ) cum District Community Police Officer, Dyama Harish while adding that the police had so far organised awareness meetings in as many as 161 villages. With the active cooperation from the villagers as many as 236 addicts had been provided the treatment facility.
“The problem of drug abuse is multidimensional one and it can not be tackled by enforcing law only. As the social issues are also involved, hence, elimination of the menace of drugs effectively is not possible without the active cooperation from the people”, said the SP while adding that the bright side of the drive against drugs was that during the awareness meetings at different villages, the villagers had promptly been coming forward to extend their wholehearted cooperation to the police, thus, virtually converting the drive into mass movement gradually.
SP (Investigation), Manvinder Singh, while sharing his experience of holding public awareness meetings in different villages, said that it could easily be gauged from the mood as well as spontaneous response of the public to the drive against drugs that the people had made up their mind to wipe out the stigma of drugs associated with their villages. The civil officials had also been involved in the awareness campaign to mitigate hesitation of the people to share their problems. “The sympathetic approach of the police towards the drug addicts also motivates the villagers to help the police”, further said the SP (Investigation) while adding that the sympathetic approach by the police had been prompting people to shun their hesitation. They started sharing their woes and ultimately come forward to help the police to bring addicts under the umbrella of treatment cum rehabilitation programme.
Subhash Batth, SHO( Sadar), who has participated in more than 30 public meetings at different villages said that it was a rare surprise for him to experience that during the drug awareness meetings people had themselves been coming forward to extend cooperation instead of raising accusing fingers against police.
SSP, Deepak Hilori, said that the police had been braving the challenge of bringing the victims of drug abuse back into the social main stream. The police had been acting tough against the drug peddlers as well as adopting sympathetic approach towards the victims.
