Ferozepur, October 21,2018: Like previous years, Police Commemoration Day was organized in memory of martyrs at police line and floral tributes were paid to police martyrs by civil adminisration, judiciary officers, families of martyrs. Present on this occasion were – Parminder Singh Pinki, MLA Urban, DIG Police M.S.Chhina, Ferozepur Range, Pritam Singh, SSP, SK Aggarwala, District and Sessions Judge, Amit Gupta SDM and SPD Baljit Singh.
Addressing the function, DIG Ferozepur Range Mukhwinder Singh Chhina said, Police Commemoration Day in India is celebrated on October 21. It honors the memory of Indian police personnel killed by Chinese soldiers in 1959. The Remembrance Day was officially instituted in 1960 and has been observed at the national level since 2012. On October 21, 1959, a group of Indian policemen led by Shri Karam Singh was attacked by the Chinese Army at Hot Springs in North Eastern Ladakh, while searching for a missing reconnaissance party. Ten policemen were killed, seven were taken prisoners, and the rest managed to escape. The Chinese returned the bodies only three weeks later. In January 1960, October 21 was officially designated as Police Commemoration Day. This remembrance day was established to commemorate the policemen killed in Ladakh and all police personnel killed in the line of duty.
Since 2012, Police Commemoration Day has been celebrated nationwide. The main parade and wreath-laying ceremony are held at the Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. All Indian police units hold commemoration parades to pay tribute to the martyrs who have sacrificed their lives for service to the society and security of the nation.
He said that 1784 police officers/employees were killed in Punjab, including DIG-2, SSP-3, SP-4, DSP-12, Inspector-32, Sub Inspector-61, Assistant sub-inspector-111, Havildar-268, Sipahi-817, Home Guards Volunteer-294 and SPO-180 laid their precious lives while retaining the unity and integrity of the country. He said that out of these 44 employees belonged to Ferozepur district, out of which Sub Inspector-I, ASI-4, HC-10, Sipahi-7, SPOs-5 and PSG -17.
He said we have full regard for the martyrs which continue for times to come. At the same time, it is our duty to make our contribution in eradicating the dreaded disease like the drug.
Parminder Singh Pinki, MLA said, the police have given great sacrifices to maintain the unity and integrity of the country and police jawans must always perform their duties with dedication. He said the police officers and jawans dedicate themselves with more dedication for extending service to the people, after guidance from martyrs.
Presenting tributes to martyrs, SK Aggarwal, District and Sessions Judge shared the glorious history of the police. He said because of sacrifices of martyrs, we could come out of the terrorism. For any judicial related work, he said, his department would be ever ready for any work.
On this occasion, Pritam Singh thanked the visiting guests and said that the Punjab Police has a history of glorious and sacrifice and Punjab Police has made great sacrifices to maintain the unity, integrity and communal harmony of the country and to maintain peace in the country which can never be forgotten. He said that Punjab Police is standing with the martyrs in every difficult hour. He urged the police personnel to make their contribution in the work of service welfare by deducting Rs.10 from their salary funds every month so that the same could be used for martyrs' families and various educational facilities of their children.
Earlier, the SPD Baljeet Singh Sandhu read out the list of the names of the officers and jawans who were killed in various security forces of the country. The Police Department also organized free Sugar Checkup Camp with assistance from the Police Welfare Society.
