Chandigarh, January 23, 2019 : Reading books, listening to motivational speakers and performing yoga. Do you think we are talking about the recreational camps? No, all these facilities are soon going to be introduced in the jails of Punjab for inmates.
The state government of Punjab has asked all the jail superintendents to introduce these facilities so that health of inmates could be taken care of. Medical camps would also be introduced in the jails for inmates.
Principal Secretary Jails on his visit to Amritsar central jail on January 8 observed that there was no work in the jail factory, few books in the library and little or no physical activity for the inmates. No medical camp was also hosted inside the jail.
The government has now suggested that one free open medical camp will be hosted inside state jails for inmates every month. The suggestion to take support from various social and religious organisations has also been given.Also, it has been suggested that special camps for women,dental,eyes among others could be hosted.
The state government has asked jail superintendents to prepare a tentative yearly calendar from February 1 this year to March 31, 2020 in which events for every month would be marked. Jail superintendents have been asked to send the calendar by January 29.
Government has also asked jail authorities to rope in the services of Patanjali, Brahamkumari or Art of Living. It is suggested that religious events can also be held to imbibe ethical and moral values in inmates.
There are a total of 9 central jails in Punjab, while 7 district and sub jails each. There is one open air Jail and one women jail in the state.
