Chandigarh, March 23, 2019: Team Chandigarh University won 5 medals (1 silver and 4 Bronze) at the recent concluded All India Inter-University Taekwondo Championship 2018-19 at the campus of MDU, Rohtak. Student teams from more than 182 Universities took part in the AIU Taekwondo Championship which is highest number of participation in the history of the tournament. The Women’s team of Chandigarh University made their mark by winning 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals while the Men’s team of the University could manage to win only one bronze medal.
In the 49kg Women’s Kyrogi category Pooja bagged silver by beating the players from Jodhpur University (17-4), Punjabi University Patiala (15-11), University of Delhi (17-7) in the preliminary rounds before losing (10-17) to player from MDU Rohtak in her final match. While in the 53 kg Kyrogi category, Khushboo Yadav won bronze medal by beating players from Manipur University (22-7) in preliminary round, Guru Kashi University, Bathinda (20-13) in Quarter-finals, losing to player from Manglore University (7-15) in the semi-final match and finally won against the player from Kerala University (19-11) to claim third position. Yet another player Harjinder Kaur won bronze medal in the 67 kg Women’s Kyrogi category while Raksha Goswami won bronze medal in the Women’s Poomasia Sub-Category of the championship.
The only medal winner in the Men’s event was Rajkumar who won bronze medal in the under-74 kg Kyrogi category. Rajkumar beat player from Arhar University, Bihar (13-9) in his first round match while he beat player from Kerala University (20-16) in quarter-finals. In his semi-finals he beat player of Guru Kashi University, Bathinda (17-9) while lost his match against Manglore University (10-16). He then won his last match against GNDU Amritsar (12-7) to win the bronze medal for the University.
Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chancellor, Chandigarh University announced scholarships for all the medal winners of the All India Inter-University Taekwondo Championship 2018-19.
