Jalandhar, April 15, 2019:- The commissionerate police on Monday have busted IPL cricket betting racket active in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament and arrested seven persons.
The accused have been identified as Mukesh Kumar alias Sethi (42) of Krishna Nagar, Atul Kumar (22) of Mohalla Gobindgarh, Sumit Nayyar (31) of Gobind Nagar, Arun Sharma (32) of Madhuban Colony, Sukhpal Singh (35) of Hardev Nagar, Kirti Goswami (31) of BT Colony, Ghas Mandi and Prince Puri (30) of Krishan Nagar.
The cops have also recovered 18 mobile phones fitted in two briefcases and chargers, two laptops, two mics, speakers and cars (PB08-CW-2340) (PB08-DS-0240) and Rs 23000 cash from their possession.
Addressing a press conference, Commissioner Of Police (CP) Mr Gurpreet Singh Bhullar accompanied by Deputy CP Mr Gurmeet Singh said that acting on a tip-off, a team of CIA-1 laid a trap near Wariana Adda and nabbed the accused.
He said that the racket was being operated by Mukesh along with others and they had registered themselves with a UK based company Betacular.com where betting is legal by paying Rs 10000 in Jan this year and downloaded a mobile application bettingassistantibook.
Bhullar said that Mukesh who is basically car dealer heads the racket and has links with Delhi based persons.
He said that the team in the cricket match which has the maximum chance of winning, that team has less value and the team which is weak, has maximum profitability.
He said that the more links will be scanned after checking the records in Laptops and their bank accounts.
Mr Bhullar added the racket is a group of 15-16 people and others will be nabbed from their revelations during the interrogation.
A case under sections 420, 120-B of IPC and 13-A-3-67 Gambling Act has been registered against them in Basti Bawa Khel Police Station.
