Under mission ‘Plastic-Free-Ferozepur’, 5 polythene bags dealers challaned
Ferozepur April 25, 2019: Asserting his aim at making Ferozepur city clean, green and pollution free, the Deputy Commissioner Chander Gaind – now popularly known as Public DC - initiated the enforcement drive to discourage the sale and use of plastic carry bags in the city. From the day one of joining of Chander Gaind has a passion to give a new look to the Ferozepur and working on its beautification in collation with various institutions and social organizations.
Acting upon Deputy Commissioner’s direction,n the joint teams of Punjab Pollution Control Board and Municipal Council inspected the premises of a few prominent wholesalers of plastic carry bags and succeeded in seizing polythene bags around one quintal. Having done such a massive recovery, teams then challaned the five wholesalers.
Divulging the details, the sanitary inspector of municipal Sukhpal Singh said that the Deputy Commissioner Chander Gaind had directed to initiate such enforcement drive as he had been involved in making people aware about giving up the use of plastic bags lately.
As a part of his awareness campaign, the Deputy Commissioner had earlier banned the entry of plastic bags in the premises of central jail, making it a plastic-free zone, he added.
He said that now the DC has directed to start enforcement of anti-plastic laws, along with the awareness campaign. Adding that he said that the state government had imposed a ban on the sale and use of the plastic bags in April 2016.
As per the notification, non-bio degradable plastic carry bags or containers, including items made of thermocol, have been banned under Section 7 of the Punjab Plastic Carry Bag Act. The Deputy Commissioner had asked both the departments to cut down the supply chain of plastic carry bags to eliminate the availability of plastic bags in the city, on which this drive has been started, he said.
The Deputy Commissioner Chander Gaind exhorted the people to come forward to make Ferozepur polythene free city and solicited their support to this environment-friendly cause. He further appealed the people to use jute bags, utensils as an alternate of plastic bags, so that a mass awareness and general consensus can be created among people to eliminate the use of polythene carry bags.
