Nawanshahr, May 26, 2019: With a view to making the teaching - learning process of Social Studies vibrant, activity oriented, easy and effective, the state education department , under " Parho Punjab, Parhao Punjab" project, has decided to organise "Social Studies Fairs " in all upper primary Government Schools. To begin with, one day school level Social Studies Fair would be organised between May 27 to 29. The Block and District level fairs would be organised in the month of July. The students from class 6th to 10th would participate in the Social Studies Fairs. Earlier, the state education department, has been organising Science and Math Fairs in the schools.
The State Council of Educational Research and Training ( SCERT) , in a communication, has also suggested some themes , projects from waste products, activities showcasing maps, models, working models, 3D charts, basic skills, quiz competitions, globe usage, role of economics in human life etc. The teachers and students have been mobilised to devise innovative activity oriented projects, models etc. making the " Social Science Fair" worthwhile in letter and spirit.
State Coordinator English/Social Studies Harpreet Kaur said that apart from acquainting the practical side of Social Studies, the fair would also focus on teaching social skills to students. The Students need to learn about inter personal skills and unity in diversity. Besides, the students would also learn about various other skills like pottery, candle making, flower making, maps and planets, she added
" Earlier Social Studies was confined to simple projects but this fair would help the students explore their talent through various practical projects. “A special ‘mnemonics technique’ about any topic of history, its important dates and significant people of that time with rhythmic details is another special feature, which would make learning easy for students”, she said while adding that the reports were pouring in about the enthusiastic preparation of Social Studies Fairs by teachers and students in the schools. The panchayat , SMC members, prominent citizens and parents would also be invited to make them aware about the changing scenario of the government schools. It would help in bringing positive change in the public perception.
