Businessman gets life term, Rs.5 crore fine for hijack hoax in Jet flight
New Delhi, June 12, 2019: A special NIA court announced life imprisonment to a Mumbai-based businessman and imposed a fine of Rs.5 crore on him for leaving a hijack threat note on a Jet Airways plane in October 2017.
As per the court orders, the fine amount submitted by the convict will be distributed among the crew members and passengers on board the affected plane – Rs.1 lack to pilot, Rs.50,000 each of all air hostesses and Rs.25,000 each to all passengers as compensation.
As per the information, Birju had left a note in English and Urdu in the tissue paper box of the aircraft’s toilet on 30 October 2017 in which it was written that plane hijackers are present in the flight and had taken hold over the plane now. It will not now be landed in Delhi and will taken direct to Kashmir of Pakistan. The note ended with the words, Allah is Great.
After coming to know of the letter, emergency landing of Plane No.9W-939 was made at Ahmedabad. It came on surface that Birju has done this intentionally to create troubles in the working of the flight. According to NIA, with this action of Birju, the life of the crew members and passengers was in danger.
Birju was arrested and probe was conducted by NIA.
Birju confessed during the investigated that it would force Jet Airways to close its Delhi operation and his girlfriend, who worked in the airline's Delhi office, would come back to Mumbai.
