Nawanshahr, June 16, 2019 : With a view to intensifying stir against the rise in incidents of gruesome violence against the medical professionals as well as medical institutions, the Indian Medical Association has decided to keep healthcare services except emergency and casualties closed for 24 hours starting from 6 a.m. on Monday. Earlier, the IMA had observed " National Protest Day" on June 14.
Divulging details, Dr. Paramjit Mann, Organising Secretary of the Punjab unit of Indian Medical Association, Dr. Sukhinder Kaur Nagra and Dr. Geetanjali Singh, president and secretary respectively of the Nawanshahr unit of IMA, former IMA secretary, Dr. Jotinder Singh Sandhu ,said here today that the IMA had mobilised doctors working in all sectors to participate in the protest. The district IMA unit, would also take out a " Car Rally" in the town to protest as well as make the masses aware about the devastating effect of rise in violence on the delivery of healthcare services as it would ultimately strain the pious relationship based on mutual trust between the doctors and patients.The doctors would wear black badges and submit memorandums to Deputy Commissioner for forwarding the same to the Prime Minister. Besides, the memorandums would also be e.mailed to the Prime Minister and Home Minister to raise the urgency of stern laws to check such incidents.
While terming the recent incident of violence at NRS Medical College as barbaric, the IMA office bearers said that the " National Protest Day" was being observed to build pressure on the centre and the state governments for enacting stern laws as well as to ensure implementation at the cutting edge level to protect the medical fraternity and the medical institutions from such incidents in future so that the medical fraternity could serve the society without any fear.
