Canadian province bans religious symbols
Quebec bans public sector employees from wearing religious symbols
Ottawa, June 18, 2019: Quebec will prohibit teachers, police officers, and certain other public sector employees from wearing religious symbols while on the job, make the French-speaking Canadian province the first North American jurisdiction to enact such a ban.
The foreign media has quoted that the new Quebec law, which also covers judges and provincial prosecutors, applies to all religious symbols including the crucifix, the government has said.
Another media house stated that the bill prohibits public servants in positions of authority from wearing religious symbols on the job. Its opponents say the law targets religious minorities while the government argues it affirms the Quebecois people’s secular identity.
In Bill 21, it is also stated that some government employees cannot wear any religious symbol and in case the women with covered faces will not be allowed to travel in buses.
The members of opposition party have said Sunday as black day for the province.
