Sunam, August 16, 2019: Balwinder Singh, a Home Guard jawan posted at the Sunam city police station, who was hit by a stray bull near Cinema Chowk in Sunam on Tuesday died today at a Patiala hospital where he was admitted for treatment.
The video of the incident has gone viral on social media. In the video, Balwinder is seen walking by the side of the road and when he reaches near the bull, the animal without any provocation charges towards him and lifts him up with his horns and slams him to the road.
Onlookers rush to save Balwinder from further harm by lifting him and taking him away. Balwinder was seriously injured in the incident and was rushed to a hospital in Patiala.
The deputy commissioner, on being asked about his administration’s response to the incident, acknowledged that issue of stray cattle needs to be tackled on priority basis but in the same breath expressed his helplessness in solving the issue.
He said the central government needs to frame a policy in this regard and the district administration has space to accommodate only 500 stray cattle while their number is nearly 10,000 in the district.
He appealed to panchayats to house stray cattle on panchayat land.
