DC issues advisory to be alert in wake of warning of heavy downpour

In wake of warning of heavy downpour and release of execessive water from the Bhakhra Dam, the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Varinder Kumar Sharma roday advised the people residing near the river Satluj and other low lying areas to remain on alert and refrain from moving near the river.
The Deputy Commissioner said that 40000 cusec excessive water has been released from the Dam today after the rise in water at the Dam due to heavy rains in the hilly areas. He said that this water was expected to reach in district by tomorrow. Sharma said that part from it the meteorological department has also issued warning of heavy rainfall, upto 120mm, in district during the coming 72 hours.
The Deputy Commissioner said that people residing on the banks of the rivers must avoid going near the river and should take full precaution for safeguarding themselves. He said that the enhanced water level in Satluj could pose danger to low lying areas along the river in district due to which safe evacuation of people and cattle was necessary. Sharma said that the district administration was keeping a close watch on the entire situation adding that they were already fully geared up to face any unforeseen eventuality arising out of the prevailing circumstances.
The Deputy Commissioner said that the Sub Divisional Magistrates of Phillaur, Nakodar and Shahkot have been put on high alert. Sharma said that other officers of the district administration have also been issued necessary instructions to tackle the emergent situation efficaciously. He said that officers have also been asked to not to leave their headquarters in any case.
However, the Deputy Commissioner appealed the people that there was no need to panic as the district administration was fully at their disposal. He said that the district administration was duty-bound to extend a helping hand to these people, in case of any sort of emergency. Sharma said that he along with top brass of the district administration was keeping a regular tab on the events unfolding due to the heavy rainfall in hill state.
