Chandigarh, 22 August, 2019: Aiming to empower the consumers and educate them about the rights and responsibilities, Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration, Punjab (MGSIPA) in collaboration with Centre for Consumer Studies, Indian Institute of Pubic Administration (IIPA), New Delhi organized a two days’ Capacity Building Workshop on Consumer Protection and Consumer Welfare which concluded at MGSIPA Institute Complex. About 28 participants including employees of Punjab Government and NGO’s attended the workshop.
The workshop was sponsored by Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India with the keen interest taken by the Shri Karan Bir Singh Sidhu, IAS, Director General and Mrs. Jaspreet Talwar, IAS, Director of the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration, Punjab for clearing the proposal.
The broad objective of the workshop was to enlighten the participants about the provisions of Consumer Protection Act and other legislations; enhance their knowledge and skills relating to services and products; help to understand the process of grievance redressal and filing of complaints and build their capacity in the area to enable them to perform their functions as per provisions of Consumer Protection Act.
Dr. VK Bansal, Head Centre for Study of Laws inaugurated the workshop. Prof. Suresh Misra and Dr. Mamta Pathania of the Indian Institute of Public Administration discussed about Consumer Protection & Empowerment; Consumer Education and Awareness; Misleading Advertisements and Consumer; and Food Safety and Consumer. Sh. Pankaj Chandgothia, Advocate, State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Chandigarh discussed Banking and Consumer; Consumer Protection Act and working of Consumer Redressal Agencies in Punjab; and Legal Metrology and Consumers. Sh. Ajay Paul Jagga, Senior Panel Counsel – Additional Govt. Pleader, Chandigarh and Member, Consumer Protection Council, Chandigarh discussed E-Commerce and Cyber Security.
Hon’ble Justice (Retd.) Paramjeet Singh Dhaliwal and President of Punjab State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission delivered the valedictory address. He highlighted the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act and explained various judgments delivered by him about the rights of the consumers.
Ms. Shweta Kaushik, Consultant, Centre for Study of Laws, MGSIPA welcomed the guests and explained the objectives of the workshop.
