Implement Solid Waste Management Rules by March 31: NGT Monitoring Committee
NGT Monitoring Committee holds review meeting in Moga
MOGA, February 27, 2020: A three-member team from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Monitoring Committee on Thursday, directed all the civic bodies of the district to ensure implementation of the solid waste management rules and start the process for remediation of legacy waste site by March 31, 2020.
The team led by a senior member of the monitoring committee and former Chief Secretary SC Aggarwal held a review meeting regarding implementation of solid waste management rules with Deputy Commissioner Moga Sandeep Hans and concerned officials from different departments. The other two members including Prominent Environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal and Former Member Secretary Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) Babu Ram were also present during the meeting.
SC Aggarwal said that if any Municipal Corporation, Municipal Council or Nagar Panchayat would fail to implement the waste segregation at source till March 31, will have to pay hefty fines. The committee has also directed all the Civic Bodies to ensure drainage of water only after treating it through Sewerage Treatment Plants.
The committee has hailed the district for being declared as Open Defecation Free (ODF) in the rural area and bagging the first rank at the national level in Swachhata Darpan Rural Ranking-2019 under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Meanwhile, after the meeting, committee members have also visited Nehru park, Bukanwala and Kokri Vehniwal village.
In the meeting, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Moga Satwant Singh, SDM Baghapurana Swaranjeet Kaur, Executive Engineer Water Supply and Sanitation JS Chahal, Executive Engineer Panchayati Raj Rajesh Kansal, District Immunisation Officer Dr Harinder Sharma and Deputy Medical Commissioner Dr Sukhpreet Brar among other officials were present.
