Chandigarh, February 27, 2020: Ujjal Dosanjh, former Premier of British Columbia, Canada, said for a nation to have an egalitarian society and be prosperous, good government schools are important.
“In India the state of government schools is very bad and it is surprising that the people are not doing enough to press the government to improve them. Private school education is accessible to a very small percentage of the population, majority have no choice but to attend government schools,” Dosanj said.
Dosanj was giving the valedictory address at the conclusion of seven days orientation course for the NSS Programme Officers from Punjab and Chandigarh at Institute for Development and Communication (IDC), Chandigarh sponsored by Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India from February 21 to 27.
The participants were from public and private educational institutions. Ujjal Dosanjh invited the participants to contribute to nurture healthy and productive youth. He suggested that education must be imparted to promote humanness and value of dignity of labour and motivate and provide skills to engage them in community work for building justice oriented nation.
He stressed the need to improve the quality of education so that the youth should be employable and also make them conscious to make interventions to reform the society to fight evils like drug addiction, dowry, female foeticide and other distortions in society.
The course covered history and philosophy of NSS theme base special camps and regular activities, Management of Accounts and record-keeping, skill development and entrepreneurship and other themes of NSS.
Eminent scholars like Prof. Kuldeep Singh, SNO Punjab and Chandigarh, Prof. Charanjit Singh, Prof. Bikram Rana and Deputy Director, Youth and Sports, Dr. Kamaljit Singh Sidhu, interacted with the participants.
