Toronto, March 15, 2020: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact in the province, Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwara Council (OSGC) is announcing the cancellation of the annual Khalsa Day Celebrations held in Downtown Toronto for the year 2020. This year’s event was scheduled for Sunday April 26 and will not be rescheduled.
Khalsa Day Celebrations is an annual Sikh Community event that is held every year on the last Sunday of April in the form of a parade starting at the CNE Grounds finishing at the Nathan Philips Square, Toronto City Hall with over 150,000 participants every year.
The impact of the COVID-19 in the GTA and the entire country has been tremendous in effecting the daily lives of Canadians. OSGC had been monitoring the situation and in touch with the various partners in the Government that help us in putting this parade together every year.
After extensive consultations and in consultations with our Khalsa Day team today we came to a responsible conclusion that the best under the circumstances would be to cancel the Khalsa Day Parade. Keeping the best interest of the communities and the safety of people of Ontario is the utmost important to the OSGC.
OSGC would like to thank our Sikh Community for their great support in helping us make this responsible decision, we would also like to thank our volunteers and sponsors for their utmost trust and support in understanding our decision.
OSGC would also like to thank the Political leadership of the various levels of the Government for coming together in this difficult times and providing a united stand in fighting this calamity. We offer our complete support to the front line responders who are fighting this difficult battle against the COVID-19 Pandemic.
