Mobiles thrown inside jail pose securing threat
Ferozepur, March 29, 2020: On Saturday, one packet containing two mobiles without SIM cards and equal number of ‘zarda’ – tobacco, reported to have been thrown by someone inside the jail and recovered in between No.16 and 17 barracks. The incident has put a question mark on the working of the authorities and security in the jail.

Earlier also, there has been recovery of mobiles and drugs from inside the jail barracks thrown from outside or from the custody of jail inmates. The security arrangements at jail are under scanner and laxity on the part of staff cannot be ruled out.
No arrangements to install jammer, to stop operation of mobiles even if they are smuggled in or thrown outside, have been made so far.
A case on the complaint of Assistant Superintendent, Nirpal Singh has been registered against the unidentified persons under Sections 52-A, 45 of Prisons Act 1894. According to Amandeep Kamboj, IO in this case, further investigations are on.
In fact, several residential and commercial and commercial establishments have come in the vicinity, posting a threat to the security of Central Jail, which house around 1200 inmates including 150 notorious criminals. It remained a matter of concern but despite this, the plan to shift the jail under the Optimum Utilisation of Vacant Government Land – OUVGL – could not be materialized.
Due to proximity of roads and buildings, it was easy to throw items like mobile phones and drugs inside the jail. In the past number of cases of recovery of mobile phones from prisoners have been reported.
However, the jail authorities are claiming that they keeping a strict watch on such activities in the jail.
