Ferozepur: 80 prisoners released from jail on parole on second day
Ferozepur, March 29, 2020: The Jail authorities have released 80 prisoners and under-trials, from jail on parole on the second day. Earlier on Sunday, 64 prisoners were released on parole.
Giving more information, Karanjit Singh Sandhu, Superintendent Jail informed that 80 prisoners have been released today on parole. Arrangements to drop them safely at their home by transporting them in buses have also been made, after completing the required formalities.
The decision to release the prisoners has been taken as per the recommendations of high panel committee as per the directions of Supreme Court, to decongest jails in an attempt to contain the Covid-19 outbreak.
The Punjab government has decided to release around 6000 prisoners to check transmission of Covid-19 in the overcrowded jails. They will be released on parole for six weeks and under trials prisoners on interim bail for six weeks. Around 24,000 prisoners are lodged in 24 jails of Punjab against the capacity of 23,488. The prisoners sentenced up to seven years with maximum two under trial cases – both on bail – and further should have availed last parole peacefully, are to be considered for release on parole. Prisoners already out on parole shall be given six-week extension in parole in order to ensure quarantining of prisons.
