Mohali, April 2, 2020: Sukhwinder Kaur (53) from Malerkotla suffering from life-threatening severe infection on a heart valve which got complicated with heart and kidney failure and sepsis got a new lease of life after she was successfully operated upon at Ivy Hospital here.
She was admitted in a hospital in Ludhiana and referred from there to Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, Director of Cardio Vascular Sciences at the hospital who realized upon diagnosis that the condition carried a very high death rate if untreated.
In these times elective surgeries are not being done to conserve resources for Covid patients but dire emergencies need to be done, said Dr Bedi who has seen such cases in Australia where he has worked earlier. He knew that this case could not be postponed at all as the heart failure was worsening. To make matters worse, she went into a heart bock – a known complication of endocarditis. The whole cardiac staff came as soon as possible even in these difficult times.
The patient underwent removal of the infected valve and vegetation and replacement with a prosthetic valve under cardio pulmonary bypass. Dialysis had to be done even as the heart surgery was in progress. The members of the cardiac surgery team included Dr Vikram Arora and Dr Jatin Singh besides highly trained nurses and paramedical staff. .
Dr Bedi told babushahi.com that the patient recovered well. Her husband and daughter thanked the hospital and the medical team for having risen to the challenge and performing the difficult surgery in the present situation.
Dr Bedi reiterated that real dire emergency cases have to be taken care of with due precautions. In such complicated cases, an essential multispecialty backup is available at the hospital. He also thanked his colleagues in other specialties and staff which responded to the crisis so selflessly.
