Bikram Singh Majithia says farmers should be compensated @ Rs 20,000 per acre for fully damaged crop and Rs 10,000 per acre for partial damage
Chandigarh, April 07, 2020: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today asked chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh to order an immediate Girdwari into the massive loss to standing wheat crop in parts of Majha and Doaba areas in the State due to hail storm two days back.
In a statement here, former minister Bikram Singh Majithia said as per reports coming from various parts of the State, the wheat crop had sustained damage due to hail and high velocity winds. He said at many places the crop had been completely flattened and it would not be possible to harvest it with combine harvesters. He said farmers should be compensated for the additional labour cost which would be required to harvest the crop.
Mr Bikram Majithia asked the chief minister to provide compensation of Rs 20,000 per acre for fully damaged crop and Rs 10,000 per acre for partial damage. “It is the moral responsibility of the State to bail out farmers in times of natural catastrophe and the government should not be found wanting in this regard”.
The SAD leader also asked the government to release compensation to farmers for damage caused during the last rabi season which had not been received by many. “Such inordinate delays in releases of compensation will cripple the farm economy”, he added
