Chandigarh , February 13,2016 ( Courtesy HT ): Amid rumours of him seeking to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress leader Jagmeet Brar on Saturday had to come out with a clarification of sorts about AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal’s presence at Brar’s family function.
Brar posted, “Arvind Kejriwal Jee CM Delhi, at a marriage reception of my close relatives. Exchanging pleasantries. There was no meeting as reported in a section of press/ media. Prominent Leaders of many political parties were present. Please don’t draw conclusions without ascertaining facts. I know all these leaders personally for the last so many years. I have my very personal equation with Mamta Jee and Nitish Kumar Jee also. This looks to be a planted story please (sic).”
It must, however, be noted that the other two leaders he mentions — West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar — have both got public support from Kejriwal, and vice versa.

The BJP reacted sharply as Party spokesperson Anil Balooni said the Left leaders were siding with those "who stand with Pakistan." Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said, "These students are not school-children. What they did was well thought out."

The Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, "Male policemen can't raid girls' hostels in the name of anti-national activities. This is an attempt to terrorise students." --(BB)

Chandigarh, February 13, 2016: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh today reiterated that the party will go ahead with the policy of 'one family one ticket' in the forthcoming assembly elections in Punjab. He said, decision has been taken keeping in view the larger interest of the party.

The PCC president said he understood the concerns of some families which may be affected by the decision. "But in the larger interest of the party this is the minimum we can do", he said, while pointing out in his own case his wife Ms Preneet Kaur and son Raninder Singh will also be opting out.

The former Chief Minister said, "when we accuse Badal of political nepotism with so many members of his family in the assembly and criticise him for the same every now and then, we cannot and must not do the same thing ourselves".

Capt Amarinder said, the policy will help in creating more space within the party to accommodate more people, particularly the youth, in the electoral process.

He said, this will also encourage first and fresh generation of new leaders who have not been born in political families but have all the attributes and qualities to become leaders.

"Let us create the space and opportunity for such promising people in the interest of the party and state as well", he said while hoping everyone concerned will understand and cooperate with this policy which has been overwhelmingly hailed and appreciated by people across the state.

Ludhiana, February 13, 2016:
To raise the issues of the unaided AICTE approved colleges, a delegation of various state associations including Punjab Unaided Colleges Association (PUCA) recently met with AICTE Chairman, Prof. Anil D. Sahasrabudhe in Delhi. The delegation submitted a memorandum regarding the problems of unaided colleges.
The delegation was led by Dr. Anshu Kataria, President, PUCA. Dr. Pardeep Kumar, President, Association of Self Financing private Institutions of Haryana; Shridhar Singh, Secretary, Rajasthan Engineering society, Jaipur; Lalit Kumar (Delhi) etc also attended the meeting.
Dr. Anshu Kataria, President, PUCA requested AICTE chairman that as AICTE regulates and allots the intake capacity of private colleges, on similar pattern private universities and deemed universities should be brought under the ambit of AICTE.
Dr. Pardeep Kumar said that in many states the state government has not constituted the regulatory body to control the functioning of these universities due to which many of these universities are admitting the students in bulk resulting into closure of small unaided colleges.
Sh. Shridhar Singh said that in many of the states, the State Government is delaying the process of formation of regulatory body due to which the small unaided colleges are being closed down. On the other hands in Himachal Pradesh, Universities have to seek the approval from state regulatory body for starting any course or increasing seats of any course.
Shridhar further said that a scam of fake degrees of Jodhpur National University has come to know wherein the University has awarded 38,000 degrees and marksheets to students out of which 25,003 were found fake. This shows that some universities are working like teaching shops as their admission process, administration process, eligibility process, examination process, fee structure etc is not controlled by any authority while in case of AICTE approved unaided colleges it is all monitored by either AICTE itself or its state affiliated university.
Listening to all the problems being faced by unaided colleges, AICTE Chairman assured to forward the memorandum to Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD).

Annual savings of more than Rs 600 crore for the people
Punjab received ‘better administrative governance’ award
Governance Reforms Commission told to identify all obsolete and antiquated laws
Chandigarh, February 13, 2016: In doing away with affidavits under governance reforms the Punjab had won accolades at national level even Prime Minister had awarded the State with ‘better administrative governance award' for adopting this unique approach mandatory for getting 89 public services. The Union government and few other states have also adopted this one of its kind practice thereby putting a stamp of appreciation on this brainchild initiative of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, S. Sukhbir Singh Badal who have implemented various governance reforms in the state in all the departments.
Disclosing this, an official spokesman said this novel practice was executed by S. Sukhbir Singh Badal 5 years ago so as to make sure hassle free procedure of providing services to people. In consequence of which, Punjab became first state in country to abolish affidavits in 2010 almost in all type of services other than 11 services for which an affidavit is mandatory under state and central laws.
Commenting on this special initiative, Deputy CM, S. Sukhbir Singh Badal said as part of an exercise to bridge gap between government and citizens, practice of submitting affidavits for all services except where legally mandatory, had been abolished. He says "Earlier people had to undergo a lot of hassles both financial and psychological to get affidavits made. So, in order to restore dignity of citizens, this practice has been bid good bye".
"The 'affidavit-free regime' in the replacement of affidavits with a self-attested declaration for all need-based services was the first step towards bridging the trust deficit between the government and the citizens", S. Badal said.
Deputy CM said he had already told Punjab Governance Reforms Commission and top bureaucrats during the meetings that all obsolete and antiquated laws which hold up progress and delay decision-making must be identified and removed at the earliest. He informed that to do away with the colonial-era legislations Punjab had undertaken unique initiatives regarding investment promotion projects. "The setting up of Punjab Investment Promotion Bureau having power of 23 departments for approval of new projects has got compliments at national level and other states are following this practise now. Even foreign investors have shown keen interest to learn this unique initiative", he informed.
The spokesman said that according to data compiled by the Punjab Governance Reforms Department, as many as 14.88 lakh affidavits were filed by the citizens to get government services in 2009-10 now the number of affidavits fell to below to merely one lakh. That amounts to an annual savings of more than Rs 600 crore for the people.
He informed that earlier, practice of sworn affidavits before magistrate or notary public was followed for legal documents purpose in respect of profession, income, caste, and residential proof. "So much so that even for availing services like-ration card, electricity, sewerage and water connection, birth and death certificates and admissions in educational institutions, a sworn affidavit attested by a gazetted officer, public notary or magistrate was mandatory", he added.
The spokesman said in respect of duplicate registration certificate, duplicate license, releasing subsidy on agricultural implements, loans under Prime Minister rozgar yojna, cancellation of hire-purchase agreement, backward area certificate, freedom fighter certificate, dependent certificate, police clearance certificate, jobs on compassionate ground and many other services also, this practice of affidavits stands abolished.....

Nevada (USA), February 13, 2016: Hindus are urging City of New Orleans Mayor Mitchell J. Landrieu, City Council and Chief Administrative Officer Andy Kopplin not to grant permits to parades related to Mardi Gras in 2017 and beyond, which showcase Hindu gods and goddesses.

A permit is reportedly required to stage a parade in the City of New Orleans as per City Ordinance.

Hindus are upset over reported parading of Hindu deities at a Lundi Gras parade associated with Mardi Gras celebrations on February eight evening in uptown New Orleans, calling it highly inappropriate.

According to reports, Krewe of Proteus presented the “The Hindu Heavens” themed parade which featured various Hindu deities; including Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Krishna, Lakshmi, Ganesha, Saraswati, Hanuman and Kali.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism; and Dr. Chandrashekar Venkat Subramaniam, President of Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Hindu Temple in Kenner (Louisiana); in a joint statement, said that Hindu deities were highly revered in Hinduism and were meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to be trivialized in carnival type parades. Inappropriate usage of Hindu deities or concepts for entertainment and other agendas was not okay as it hurt the devotees.

What was the purpose of unnecessarily dragging Hindu gods, whom Hindus venerated and seriously addressed their prayers, in an extravagant carnival type atmosphere associated with Mardi Gras? Subramaniam and Zed asked.

Rajan Zed and C. V. Subramaniam also urged the organizers of this parade involving Hindu gods to offer a formal apology.

Hinduism was the oldest living and third largest religion in the world with about one billion adherents and rich philosophical thoughts and it should not be taken frivolously. Sacred symbols of any faith, larger or smaller, should not be mishandled, Subramaniam and Zed noted.

Rajan Zed and C. V. Subramaniam further said that Hindus were always for free artistic expression and speech as much as anybody else if not more. But faith was something sacred and attempts at trivializing it were disturbing to the followers, they added.

Krewe of Proteus, founded in 1882, said to be the second-oldest parade krewe in New Orleans Mardi Gras, reportedly claims to be still using the original chassis from the early 1880's for its floats. Lundi Gras happens on Monday before Mardi Gras Day (last day of the carnival season, which was February nine this year). The origins of Mardi Gras go back to medieval Europe and it was openly celebrated in New Orleans by 1730s, reports suggest. Parades are a major part of Mardi Gras celebrations. Krewe of Proteus reportedly had 230 men and 20 floats in this parade. Landrieu has called the 2016 Mardi Gras season a "huge success", terming New Orleans Mardi Gras as “the biggest free show on earth”.

Ludhiana, February 13, 2016: To raise the issues of the unaided AICTE approved colleges, a delegation of various state associations including Punjab Unaided Colleges Association (PUCA) recently met with AICTE Chairman, Prof. Anil D. Sahasrabudhe in Delhi. The delegation submitted the memorandum regarding the problems being faced by unaided colleges.
The delegation was led by Dr. Anshu Kataria, President, PUCA. Dr. Pardeep Kumar, President, Association of Self Financing private Institutions of Haryana; Sh. Shridhar Singh, Secretary, Rajasthan Engineering society, Jaipur; Mr. Lalit Kumar (Delhi) etc also attended the meeting.
Listening to all the problems being faced by unaided colleges, AICTE Chairman assured to forward the memorandum to Ministry of Human Resource & Development (MHRD).

Nevada (USA), February 13, 2016: The new Muscat International Airport (MIA), currently under development in Oman, will reportedly have 24 prayer rooms for men and women.

Hindus are urging Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC), responsible for the management and operation of all Oman airports including MIA, for a designated “Hindu Prayer Room” out of the reported 24-prayer rooms in the new MIA, whose construction work is expected to finish by year-end.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that as considerable number of Hindu passengers used MIA; it would be nice if they had a quiet facility at the upcoming new MIA where they could pray/meditate/worship and perform religious services.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, urged OAMC Board Chairman Dr. Juma bin Ali Al-Juma and CEO Aimen Ahmed Al Hosni to work in this direction as an issue of fairness and equality in customer service. He or other Hindu scholars would be glad to help, if asked, regarding the structure of “Hindu Prayer Room”.

Hindus would appreciate OAMC if this “Hindu Prayer Room” at the new MIA had murtis (statues) of popular deities, copies of sacred scriptures, a traditional bell and recorded devotional music; Rajan Zed noted.

Prayer/worship to God was highly important in Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents; and it would be great to have “Hindu Prayer Room” at new MIA so that Hindu passengers did not miss their daily worship rituals/rites while travelling through it; which might include recitation of texts, repetition of mantras and dhayan (meditation), Zed added.

According to reports, when completed, the new MIA will have the capacity to handle 12-million passengers per annum, besides world’s largest aircraft. The passenger terminals are being designed using "state of the art" technology. Further planned expansions will ultimately boost its capacity to 48-million passengers per annum. It will include a 90-room hotel with a sports club, seven medical clinics and 149 elevators of various sizes.

Mission Statement of OAMC, owned by the Government of the Sultanate of Oman, includes “fostering a culture of innovation”. Airport history of Oman goes back to 1929.....

New Delhi , Feb 13, 2016 : India MD of Facebook Kirthiga Reddy have resigned.
"I have also begun to explore new opportunities at Facebook back at Menlo Park," Reddy said in a Facebook post.
Reddy, who joined Facebook in 2010 as its first employee in India, said she would be relocating to the United States in the next 6-12 months.

Kirthiga posted on her Facebook page :

When my family relocated to India, we knew that we would move back to the US some day. It’s a bittersweet moment to share that the return timeframe is coming up in the next 6-12 months. Our two daughters start high school and middle school this coming year— which serves as a natural transition point to make this move back.
I could not be more excited about where the Facebook business is in India, where we are going and what’s to come. Over the last six years, starting as the first employee for Facebook in India, I have had the privilege to be part of our amazing growth journey -- from our operations in Hyderabad to being a business partner for our clients as they build their brands and grow their business in this mobile-first world. Above all, it’s all been about our mission: “Give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.” We have only just begun.
What am I going to be doing? It will be business as-usual over the next 6-12 months. I am working closely with William Easton and Dan Neary as we search for my successor in India. I have also begun to explore new opportunities at Facebook back at Menlo Park. As I do this, I continue to experience the same aha moments as I did in my first few weeks at Facebook -- that our mission is so much bigger, the opportunities are so much larger, and each facebooker is so much more jaw-dropping-inspiring than one thinks possible.
6-12 months is a long time – so let’s make sure we make the overdue coffee catchups happen! I’m grateful to have two countries to call "home," have had this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and look forward to the next one, and have the opportunity to partner with each of you.

While informing about the release of Pamma, Amrik Singh of Sikh Federation (UK) informed on Friday that " We have just learnt the Minister of Justice in Portugal has this morning rejected India's request for extradition of Paramjeet Singh and ordered his immediate release".

He had obtained political asylum in UK and has been living there since 2004. He was arrested by Interpol from a Portugese town of Evora on December 18.
""This decision is based on the fact that the Indian national qualification for refugee status given by the British authorities in September 2000, when he was granted asylum in that country and issued a valid travel document until April 24, 2023, which enables the move by several EU countries, including Portugal."said Amrik quoting Justice Minister Frances Van Dunem.....

Amritsar, February 12,2016 - Actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who stars in “Sarbjit”, a biopic on Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, arrived in Holist Sikh Shrine Golden Temple for shooting here on Friday for Film.

The moment she touched the threshold of the marbled periphery of the Golden Temple, around the pool of nectar (water pond) the sea of public thronged that alarmed media photographers as a result shooting was halted for few hours.

Cladding Punjabi Suit, covering her head with Duppata with Punjabi style she paid obeisance in the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple, thereafter she went to Langar (community kitchen) of the Golden Temple where she cooked food, cleaned floor with broom with devotion to seek blessing from Almighty.

Shooting for film was begun afternoon remained continue till evening whereupon different kind of scenes were shot including inside the community kitchen while cleaning utensils, cleaning floor of Langar, cooked chapatti while sitting on floor, also participated in cooking vegetables. She was seen standing before the deg (big ironed rounded utensils) used for cooking for several hundred people.

In the Omung Kumar-directed movie, the 42-year-old actor plays the role of Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur, while actor Randeep Hooda will be seen in the titular role.

“Aishwarya Rai was accompanied by battery of her security guards inside the Golden Temple besides film crew.

The film is slated to release on May 20. It will be shot in various cities of Punjab including Amritsar, Malerkotla and Patiala.

The film captures the plight of prisoners lodged in various jails across the border.

“I hope the biopic will highlight the plight of Indian prisoners lodged in various jails in Pakistan,” said Dalbir Kaur sister of Sarbjit Singh, who struggled for decades to get her brother out of the Pakistani prison.

Sarabjit died after a brutal attack by jail inmates in a Pakistani jail in 2013. He was convicted of terrorism and spying by a Pakistani court and sentenced to death in 1991 but the government had stayed his execution for an indefinite period in 2008.

His sister and family started a campaign for his release saying he was the victim of mistaken identity and had inadvertently strayed across the border in an inebriated state.

“When I had started struggle to secure Sarabjit’s release, I keenly desired that a film must be prepared based on his life so that the issue gets the world’s attention and people and the government across the border also understands the facts as they stand,” she said.

About Aishwarya playing the role, Dalbir said, “She is the right choice. I came to know that while shooting a scene for the film earlier, she turned emotional.

“I strongly wish that film should depict the hardships faced by Sarbjit Singh during his life time especially the time he had spent in the Kotlakhpatrai jail of Lahore in Pakistan where he was killed in a murderous attack by one of the jail mate” Kaur quipped.
