‘Despacito’ was heard blasting through the car radio and the driver was seen bobbing his head along with the music, mouthing the lyrics without a hitch. Everyone knows this song, its music, its rhythm, its lyrics and their meaning. We sing ‘Mi Gente’ just as well, which is another Spanish song. How did this happen? Last I checked, we lived in India not Spain, then how on earth did the driver of the car turn efficient in Spanish? How did every one of us?
Well, the sudden addition of Spanish vocabulary in our ‘Desi’ lives is due to another language that has been a part of lives for way longer than we have lived. This language is the strongest form of communication, universal in nature and magical in entity. The language has more names than what one could count, but its every name holds the same meaning of melodious beauty beyond words. In English, it has been christened Music.
Music is a universal language that has the power to connect millions and billions of people, having completely different lives, existences, cultural and ethical beliefs; through its melody. There exist various proofs of the connectivity power of music throughout history, especially in recent years when we have the means of exploring the world handy, literally through the internet in our computers and mobile phones. Travel back a few years and recall the craze of ‘Gangnam Style’, when everyone could be seen riding an imaginary horse, singing along to some unintelligible lyrics no one knew the meaning of. Go further back and Shakira’s ‘Waka Waka’ would come to mind whose most famous lines weren’t in English either. The older generations would remember dancing along with the tunes of ‘Macarena’ with wild abandon. Right now, the music that is being appreciated worldwide is Korean leading to the emergence of a new genre, often referred to as K-Pop. The Korean bands ‘ EXO’ and ‘BTS’ are much in hype in the western countries along with slowly, but surely, becoming household names in our countries as well.
As long has man has interacted with others, shared communication, music has been exchanged which has greatly contributed in bridging the gap between humans. The strings of music have tied us together and there couldn’t be a more beautiful or stronger knot. This bond of music doesn’t just connect us but instills in us the values of cultural tolerance and understanding, even encouraging us to invest our hearts into discovering the best of other countries, cultures, religions which will help us understand that we aren’t that different from each other. Music just might be the key to world peace. The connection of souls forged by the songs and welded by the rhythmic melodies, is unbreakable. We were divided by origin but have connected through music.
