Last night, I watched ‘Delhi Crime’ a series based on ‘Nirbhaya Rape case’, I could not sleep because whole night, I dreamt that somebody was ripping off my intestines. Awake, I was completely disturbed, emotionally and mentally.
Seven years back, in our national capital, a 23 year old girl was gangraped by six people, including one minor. At that time, we were residents of Delhi, I remember how every person got scared with this incidence, girls stopped going outside in late evening hours.
In fact, ‘Select city Walk’ a mall where we used to go often on weekends to spend some good time and we returned sometimes at around 11 or 12 o’clock. This mall was the same, from where that girl, was returning on that night after watching a movie, with her boyfriend not very late, but at around 9 o’clock.
Few days back, when I said , I want to watch this series ,’Delhi Crime’ on Netflix , my husband said , “Don’t watch this, we already know what happened with Nirbhaya, you will get disturbed!” But I decided to watch. I thought, by not watching, I and We, could not run from reality and reality is very cruel and bitter.
Sometimes, we forget things very fast and life starts going very smoothly. But I think if we keep refreshing these things then we will not forget, that even after becoming new laws, girls and ladies are still living in that more or less same world rather I will call it ‘ridicule world’.
Few days back, when I read a poem, written by one Punjabi poet (my Facebook friend) that was published in a Punjabi newspaper, it was a basically a ‘Naseehat’ (advice) to an Indian girl about not to wear western clothes.
I thought it would have been if that poem would have been about not to stare at other girls, except your own wife, and about remembering, that that our own culture, teaches men, that all women should be treated like mothers and sisters.
Anyway, after watching that series, I came to know that one of the culprits pulled ‘Nirbhaya’s intestines out of her anus with his hand. I got numb! I discussed with one of my friends that, how it is possible? How can somebody insert his whole hand?
He interrupted and said, “Why are you asking these silly questions? Every third pornography film is showing this”. And he said, “yaar that girl challenged the ego of those by scolding them, you know? Men become mad if their ego gets instigated.”
In year 2014, I was studying in Delhi University, I remember one of my professors, was telling stories about protests which happened in Delhi after Nirbhaya rape case, while concluding the conversation, he said, if that girl would not have gone to the movie with her boyfriend in late hours, then that crime could have been avoided.
After listening to these two answers, from very well educated males and residents of metropolitan cities, I got more worried, than what I was, after watching that series.
In BBC world’s documentary ‘India’s Daughter’, which was based on Nirbhaya, a real interview, with one of the culprits named ‘Mukesh’ was shown, who was driving that bus ,in which that crime happened.
He said, “Jo ladki itni raat ko apne boyfriend ke sath bahar ghoom sakti hai aap he sochiye wo shareef kaise ho sakti hai.” And he further said that when that girl was being raped, she should not keep scolding the men who were raping her.
Mukesh’s answers were not much different than my professor’s answer and from my male friend’s. If majority of males of our society keep thinking like this, then I think our social and religious setup are bigger culprits than the poverty and illiteracy. Males generally think that they are stronger and more superior than females and they believe in subjugating them.
Of course, pornography also would have been one of the main cause of this type of crimes. In these movies women are generally projected as an object on which men keep experimenting their dirty and filthy acts which are full of lust.
These movies provide ideas to the common men for this kind of unnatural act. And this is a worldwide phenomena.
Pornography is very easily available even to minors. If it can not be avoided in this era of internet then it should be filtered very carefully. In colleges, and in senior classes of schools minors should be taught about, what is natural sex and what is unnatural.
These things can neither be curtailed with laws and punishments nor by imposing restrictions on one particular gender.
