I remember approximately 15 years back, I wrote my very first article for an English newspaper that was on the rape of a minor in which Supreme Court gave capital punishment to all the three culprits because the case was in the rarest of rare category.
In that case, a five year old girl was raped and then an iron rod was inserted in her which caused severe injuries and she succumbed to them.
Out of anguish, I made suggestions in my article that this kind of criminals should be killed in the public by chopping off their private parts.
That article was not published. My write up was not correct according to a civilised society in which we are living. But after 8 years, Nirbhaya rape case happened with similar kind of heinousness.
New laws related to rape were framed but no big change was observed and no reduction in rape cases recorded. Reporting of rape cases increased but conviction rates remained stagnant and pending cases related to sex crimes are piling up in courts.
After seven years of Nirbhaya case, the Hyderabad rape case happened in which a veterinary doctor was raped, killed and burnt. Member of Parliament Jaya Bachhan said in Parliament that the perpetrators of the Hyderabad rape should be publicly lynched so that men can feel the fear of law before committing the heinous crime of rape.
In an interview to the NDTV, Najma Heptulla, Governor of Manipur and former Vice President, BJP, also agreed with Jaya Bachhan’s remarks.
But why we women think like this? Because we feel that morality of some men in our country is very low and they have no fear of law because of our sluggish judiciary and law system.
They are habitual criminals and they are keep on committing these crimes without any fear.
In our country every 20 minutes a woman raped, and this number is of the reported cases because a majority of rape cases aren’t reported.
According to a report by the Livemint, about 99 per cent of cases of sexual violence go unreported. If this is true then this would put India among the nations with highest levels of crime against women.
Leaders of BJP are worried about the conduct, behaviour and morality of Indian women.
For example, recently, a book written by Khushwant Singh was removed from the book stalls at the Bhopal railway station because Ramesh Chandar Rattan, Chairman of Railway Board’s passenger service committee felt that by reading this kind of literature morality of our daughters and sisters can get corrupted.
I am surprised why he is not worried about our sons and brothers. Are they allowed to do everything and can they behave in whatever way they want?
Chandigarh MP and BJP party member Kirron Kher while commenting on a rape case in Chandigarh gave advice to girls not to board autorickshaws which has only males travelling in them.
If she, being a MP and member of the BJP, the party which is in power at the Centre, is feeling so hopeless about the situation then who will do something to improve the situation.
It is very sad that our prime minister had enough time appear in Discovery channel’s ‘Man vs Wild’ but he has no time to think about huge number of uneducated, unemployed young men watching pornography on phones who are going wild and committing crimes agains women.
Now no leader is reminding those men about our religious books which taught us to treat ladies with respect.
If one reporter or writer says something against government, a huge number of bhakts come to the fore and start protesting via WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook, but in this latest case of rape, there is complete silence.
But yes! in this case, they may be very sure that the women with whom these things are happening must surely be not behaving appropriately in public, or their dress and conduct must be inappropriate, otherwise with so called ‘Shudh Bhartiya Pramparavadi Naari’ can never be raped and even if raped she will never report it to the police because she knows that if she will do this, respect of her family will be put on stakes.
And more than that if she forgets this then our police and very honest and good lawyers and judges are there, who remind her again and again that after this she will become an object of disrespect in our society forever. As a result there are many factors which makes women afraid and men fearless.
I am pretty sure that the Home Minister of Telangana is not aware of our people’s faith in the police.
He must go through the survey done recently in Mumbai and Delhi regarding this that how much faith people have in police.
I think that’s why he said that if that veterinary doctor would have dialled 100 instead of dialling her sister’s phone her life would have been saved.
I don’t know why Chief Minister of Telangana suspended the three policemen related to this case only after the case came into limelight!
