Killing oneself: Killing Humanity!
Recently, WSPD (World Suicide Prevention Day) was observed world over on 10 of September as it is observed every year since 2003. On this day, various events are organized to make people aware about the tendency to commit suicide and how can we all together prevent this unholy thing to happen.
Natural death is mandatory and happens in its natural framework with age and there could be other innumerable reasons for death to happen. Physical ailments, diseases, incurable genetic diseases, syndromes, fatal mental illness and the list goes on but all these problems are not left to proliferate and force the person to die, these are treated till the time these could be and patients are provided with proper care. Among all these there are certain illnesses which are not very clearly visible or identifiable and are considered one of the most fatal.
Killing oneself is one of the most heinous deed that any individual can practice. Demise of any individual causes a ripple and that too very painful which affect the family, friends, colleagues and many more around with whom we may not be in very close association as it’s a human behavior that cause a deep impact on the mentality of a society as a whole. If we look at the figures about how many people commit suicide every second every day, these are heart breaking and very depressing!
Depression, loneliness, poverty, unemployment, greed, discontentment, comparisons are some of the very prominent causes that push an individual to destroy his or her own identity. How can we prevent this? What should be done to build a happy and healthy society? The two most important things that one should start practicing are: Start listening and stop comparing. 90% of people end up in depression just because they do not find someone where they could just express themselves and the person in front just listens without comparison and judgement.
Our teenagers mostly fall into this category of committing suicide. Its heartbreaking to see our beautiful, active, capable, smart young learners, hang themselves or poison themselves to death. It is the duty of the adults and the so- called rulers or the policy makers of the society to understand and take care of these budding citizens of our country.
Adolescence is a very tender age and they need lot of care, love and support in a way that they find opportunities, they learn to celebrate success, they learn to accept their mistakes and take lessons from those mistakes, they develop healthy relationships and build courage to face whatever comes their way with a positive attitude.
Being a teacher by profession, I learn every day and every minute. I deal with kids from all age groups and throughout I have learned one thing that every age group need a different kind of support, guidance and care. If I talk about adolescents, they are very tender, sensitive, slowly getting exposed to adulthood and at the same time deal with hundred other problems that arise due to the biological changes in their bodies. It is not easy! Believe me! These kids are brave hearts who deal with all these and still carry on! But what is our role here?
We as adults should learn to develop a balance between our own thinking as adults and what an adolescent think. Listen to them, guide them through examples, do not impose things on them, give them space to think, analyze, evaluate and then conclude, most important is to develop a belief in them and make them realize that each one of them matters and is much needed, love them and teach them the power of positive thoughts and love.
We as adults and a society all together carry a big responsibility on our shoulders and let’s not forget that these young adults are our future and our nation builders. Let’s help them in every way to grow and prosper.
“We all have got one life and let’s make it purposeful.”
