By reading the title, you all may get a bit disappointed but wait and have patience, I am going to unfold the story behind, shortly. All of us know, children are full of energy and are free of all the worldly tensions and responsibilities, though there are some who have a quiet disposition and are very sensitive to even the smallest of the happenings around. Recently, I watched this beautiful short film about a boy who lives with his father and mother in some small town of Himachal Pradesh. The family is middle class and the only source of income is his father, who is a writer by profession. The boy is around 11 or 12 years old and is not a very demanding child. So, usually what happens we as parents are very adaptive when it comes to our children that is if the child is hyperactive, we adapt to his or her habits accordingly or if the child is quiet and more sensitive and understands things and situations better, we become comfortable that way but the question here is, are we really understanding our children?
Moving further with the story, school was taking the boy’s class for a trekking trip and his friend asked him to come along but something was stopping him to agree for the trip as he knew that his parents won’t permit him. On this, he lies to his friend and tells him that his grandparents are coming on the weekend, so he can’t join them. He reaches home and sees his father busy writing his book, he keeps standing for some time and appreciates his father and ends up complimenting him for wearing a red shirt but could not ask for the trip. After dinner, before going to sleep again he tries to ask his mother for the trip and starts by complimenting her for making a tasty dinner but he doesn’t get any success as his mother refuses him and without explaining the reason, tells him that he cannot go, that’s it.
By this part of the story, most of you must have recognized that how the little boy was trying to convince his parents but could not get any success because the parents are so very much comfortable and presumes that he will understand everything even if they will not explain him but the child was not happy. So, finally he decides to pay for his trip on his own by selling all the waste papers to the scrap collector but unfortunately some of his father’s new book pages also go in that and then the problem starts. The boy doesn’t reveal at first but when he tells the truth, his father realizes a very big thing that we as parents and as adults get so very much engrossed in our problems that we totally ignore the childhood of our children sometimes, though we work for them only but we need to understand that kids are kids and they need our time and attention more than our money because at that age they do not recognize the importance of money but they do recognize our love and support. So, finally his father agrees to take him on a family outing though he could not afford his trip and the smile on the face of the child was heavenly!
Dear parents, we all work hard for our kids but do not ignore their innocence, their hidden demands. Do spend time with them, to know them, to explore them, to value them, to teach them and to have fun with them. This whole story taught me also one thing that children of this 21st century are already very smart and logical and they have much better understanding powers that we had when we were at their age but what they actually need is your time and patience. They want you as their applauders, as their friends, as their recognizers and as their encouragers. Do not overestimate your kids and take out time to make them realize that they are kids and they have full right to enjoy their childhood!
Happy parenting!
