Jalandhar, December 08, 2017: The Commissioner of Police (CP) Praveen Kumar Sinha, IPS today solicited fulsome support and cooperation of general public for curbing the menace of incidents of snatching in the city.
In a statement issued here today, the Commissioner of Police said that the incidents of snatching need to be dealt with sternly under a planned strategy of Police and the general public. He said that crime management involves detection as well as prevention of crime. Mr. Sinha said that Police is actively pursuing detection part through enhanced vigil in the city, but on the prevention side, police would like the citizens to take certain steps to assist in curbing this menace.
He said that analysis of the modus operandi of the snatchers apprehended in last few months’ shows that snatchers were following a set pattern while undertaking this crime. The prime targets of these snatchers have been ladies’ purses and mobile phones. The pattern analysis shows the following:
· Ladies travelling on rickshaws with purses on their right shoulders have been targeted.
· People walking on roads talking on mobile phone in their right hand have been targeted.
· Snatchers normally prefer to commit the acts in the lanes and by-lanes which are lonely.
· Most of the snatchers have not been wearing helmets while committing the crime.
Mr. Sinha said that slew of preventive measures by the general public along with measures of Police could be instrumental in checking this crime. Suggesting the preventive measures, the Commissioner of Police requested the people to assist the police in the following ways:
· First of all the people must report promptly to the Police about any sort of suspicious person/ persons roaming unnecessarily in their localities.
· Ladies travelling on rickshaws must ensure that the hood is lifted, which reduces the possibility of snatching to a great extent.
· Mobile phones and purses should be carried in the left hand or on the left shoulder as the case may be. Most often snatchers come from the right side only. Also, this leaves the right hand free to counter the culprit executing the crime.
Regarding wearing of helmets by two-wheeler riders, the Police Commissioner stressed that the police was not getting co-operation from the people, as most often people do not want to wear helmets. This is not only a violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, but it also creates disorder in society. Hence, the Police Commissioner appealed to all sections of society to become a partner in enforcing wearing of helmets which was also essential for safety of the riders. Many people have lost their lives in last few months for mot wearing helmets. This will also help police in identifying snatchers.
It was stressed that Jalandhar Commissionerate Police endeavors to make the city snatching free. However, the crimogenic factors are not entirely in the hands of the police. Hence, if we persevere together, we shall be successful. TOGETHER WE SHALL WIN.
