Chandigarh, November 12, 2018: Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association trainee Calvin Golme staged a fine rally to cause a mild upset by defeating eight seed Harshdeep Singh Sandhu in three setter first round men's singles match by 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the CLTA-AITA National Ranking Tennis Championships at the Sector 10 Tennis Stadium here today.
Down 0-3 Calvin made it 4-4 against experienced opponent. However Hardeep Singh closed the first set 6-4. In the second set Calvin come back with more consistent forcing the opponent to commit errors. Calvin won the set 6-2. In the third and final set both players were fighting for every singles point.They were holding their servse till 4-4. In the ninth game of the final set Calvin got a chance to break the opponent's serve and closed the match 6-4.
Another CLTA trainee Rishabh Sharda was playing consistent ground strokes against second seed Jagmeet Singh. Both the players were playing very aggressive ground strokes from the baseline. Both players were holding serve till 5-5. In the 11 game Rishabh break opponent serve and hold his serve win the set 7-5. In the second set Jagmeet Singh was breakup 4-3. Rishabh came back strongly and took three games in a row and won the set 6-4.
Another CLTA trainee Shashikant Rajput also moved into pre-quarterfinals beating K.S. Dheeraj 7-6(3), 6-0.
The most interested and closely fought match was between qualifier Keneizesotuo Whourie and Yuvraj Singh. Both fought well for each point. However, Whourie just managed to clinch the match, but not before huffing and puffing in two sets which were extended to tie-breaker to resolve the deadlock 7-6(4), 7-6(5),
In the women’s singles opening round seventh seed CLTA trainee Prinkle Singh from Jammu and Kashmir, faced a tough resistance from qualifier Harleen Kaur 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Inin the first set Prinkle give a tough competition to Harleen Kaur. Prinkle forced Harleen to do the errors. Prinkle win the set 6-3. In the second set Harleen came back with aggressive ground strokes and forced her rival to commit errors. Harleen win the second set 6-2,
In the final set both the players were running down for every balls and fighting for every singles points holding own serve till 5-5. In the 11th game Prinkle got a chance to break her opponent serve and hold her serve win the set 7-5.
Another CLTA trainee Kaavya Sawhney could not focus in the first set and lost the set 3-6. In the second set Kaavya staged rally with aggressive ground strokes and won the set 6-2. In the final set from the very beginning Kaavya broke her opponent serve and won the set and match 6-1.
