Residents strongly oppose shifting of 1400 Vendors in Open ground adjoining DAV School in Sector 15
Authorities adamant on shifting despite HC order against it : Residents
Chandigarh, November 1, 2019 :
To make sector 17 vender free zone as per High court orders and to relocate the vendors, a Vending Zone is being created in Sector 15, Chandigarh. The residents of sector 15 have been made scapegoat and about 1400 vendors are being shifted in open ground adjoining DAV school sector 15.
Saurav Khanna Dy Adovcate GeneralPunjab who resides in this sector disclosed that it is against the bylaws made under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) framed by administration itself in which No vending zone is allowed within 50 meters of school or government building or Junction of road where as this location is at distance of Zero meter from DAV School and Girls Hostel with common boundary wall, Government Boys Hostel and also T-Junction of important Sector Roads.‘Also it’s a Green area as per zoning plan which cannot be used for any other purpose. Vending zone at this point will create fire and traffic hazard risking life of the residents and all sort of problems specially regarding safety of girls,’quipped Khanna.
It is worth mentioning here that already vendors have been located thrice in this sector in form ofPatel market, Dhobi Ghat and Old Book market which is a lot more than permitted 2.5%. A PIL is already pending in the High Court and it has been ordered by the Hon’ble High Court that the grievances and representations of the residents of Sector 15 should be looked into and appropriate decision has to be taken by the Competent Authority.
The residents have submitted their representation to the authorities. However it seems that authorities are adamant to shift the vendors in this area due to some vested interest.
