Chandigarh, May 29, 2016: Kerala emerged overall champions by logging 156 points in the 13th National Youth Athletic Championship at Kozhikode (Kerala) on Saturday. Tamil Nadu and Haryana finished runners-up and third with 114 and 95 points, respectively. Uttar Pradesh, who were leading for two days in the three-day meet, were relegated to the third place with 78 points.
Haryana secured first position in boys team championship by obtaining 87 points. Kerala and Tamil Nadu secured 52 points each to joint second position. Kerala girls claimed the team championship with 104 points while Tamil Nadu were runners-up with 62 points.
Sreeshankar and Jisna Mathew, both of Kerala, were adjudged the best athletes among boys and girls with 1019 and 1067 points, respectively.
Nivya Anthony of Kerala rewrote the national and meet records in pole vault for girls with a clearance of 3.31 metres. The old national record was of 3.30 metres which was set by Sinju Prakash MK of Kerala in 2011. The old meet record of 3.20m was standing in the name of Maiya Jaison of Kerala since 2013.
Priyanka of Punjab ran a good race in 2000m steeplechase for girls and broke the old record by clocking 7:21.23. The old record of 7:35.71 was established by Nandini Gupta of Uttar Pradesh in 2014.
Abitha Mar Manuel, representing Athletic Federation of India. won gold medal in 800 metres for girls in a new meet record timing of 2:10.52. The previous record of 2:10.72 was written by Jessy Joseph of Kerala in 2012. Jisna Mathew (Kerala) set new meet record in one lap race by clocking 52.88 against the old record of 54.70 set by MR Poovamma, Karnataka, in 2007.
The first four finishers in 2000 m steeplechase race for men broke the old record of 6:01.23, established by Sheopujan Bind of UP in 2004. Raj Kumar (Delhi) got gold by clocking 6:00.28. Vikas Poonia (Mah) 6:00.64 and Navin Malik (Haryana) 6:00.82 bagged silver and bronze medals, respectively.
