May.26, 2020: Under Mission Tandrust Punjab, government is making all out efforts to improve the hygenie level of the villages by cleaning the village ponds before the onset of the rains, so that these cleaned ponds could be used as water recharging structures in the village. The campaign launched to clean all the 14,500 ponds of villages by dewatering and de-silting is going on in full swing in the state and it will be completed before 10th of June, said K.S.Pannu Director Mission Tandrust Punjab cum Secretary Agriculture during his visit to various villages Jhampur, Bhaini Kalan, Hindupur and Isserhel of the district to take stock of the ongoing work of pond’s cleaning.
He said that the cleaning of village ponds is not only an exercise to improve sanitation conditions in villages but it is also a movement of community mobilization for common cause. He appreciated the enthusiasm of village sarpanches and panchayats for leading the campaign to regain the glory of village ponds by dewatering, de-silting, and beautifying these ponds. He said that the village labour under MGNREGA is also being gainfully employed to improve general hygiene of village during the COVID threat. He said it is unfortunate that the village ponds which used to be the centres of village civilization in modern times have turned into the pits of filth.
He also appreciated the efforts being put in by the officials of rural development department and exhorted them to ensure the cleaning of all the ponds and educate the villagers to utilize these ponds to recharge rain water.
